“Dammit, Cammy, you ride like a sack of shit,” Drake yelled across the arena to me.

Tears sprung to my eyes at his words, they weren’t the most patient riding instructors around. In fact, they were being total jerks to me about my bad riding.

“I’m trying,” I said through my tears, “Lay off me.”

We had been at it for only half an hour, I didn’t know what they’d expected. I was terrified, the horse wasn’t listening to me, and my ass hurt like mad.

I thought this might end up being my one and only ride, the way it was going.

Taylor came running out across the arena and grabbed my horse by the reins. He looked up, smiled and said, “Listen, why don’t we go at this when we have more time?”

“Sounds good to me,” I sniffled and dragged my sleeve across my nose.

“Don’t mind Drake, he’s just hard on everyone who isn’t as perfect as he is,” he told me and led my Sultan towards the stable.

“I don’t mean to be such a wimp, I’ve never done this before,” I said, calming down with Taylor’s gentler ways.

“We’ll turn you into a little cowgirl yet,” he laughed, “Don’t you worry about that.”

He helped me off Sultan and showed me how to take off the tack and put him away. Drake stood to the side, watching and smirking at my attempts to lock the stall door.

“What the fuck is your problem?” I lashed out and turned towards him. I felt full of fury that he’d been so rude after being so nice to me.

“I just find it funny that you’ve spent years acting like you’re better than us, and you can’t even ride,” he said.

“Better than you? Are you kidding me? I went through hell all through high school because you and your brother and all your loser friends thought you were hot shit,” I spat.

“Exactly,” he replied evenly, “you just said it yourself. Losers. That’s how you see us and now that our parents are getting married, I guess you’re part of our big loser family.”

“Drake, lay off her,” Taylor said and stood in front of me, “she’s had a rough few days. We knew dad was going to ask her mom, right? Think about how Camille must feel, this is all so fast.”

Drake glared at me, thought about it for a moment, and his face softened back into a smile. “Yeah, all right,” he said, “I guess we can be friends.”

He extended his hand and I shook it, trying to ignore the fluttering in the pit of my stomach at the touch of his skin.

What was wrong with me?

We walked back to the house together, one twin on each side of me, chatting and horsing around trying to make me laugh.

I soaked up their attention, thrilled to be the center of it. I’d been ignored or made fun of for so long, I loved being part of the group at long last.

We had to leave for our parent’s wedding rehearsal dinner in the evening, but there was no sign of them when we got back to the house.
